Antony Batty & Company Employee Focus: David Parker

11th January 2023

David is based at our Central London Office and is a Senior Insolvency Manager and Head of Case Progression

This month we are shining the spotlight on one of our colleagues, David Parker, who is based at our London office. David is a Senior Insolvency Manager and also our Head of Case Progression.

We asked David to answer some questions, including what got him into the Insolvency profession, what he particularly enjoys about Insolvency, and of course we also asked him what he enjoys in his spare time away from Insolvency.

  1. What do you enjoy about insolvency? What got you into the profession?

“What I like about insolvency is that no one day is ever the same.

You would think that one insolvency is much the same as another i.e., not enough money in the pot for a company to pay its creditors. To an extent that is true, but it is the events that led the Directors, Shareholders or Charge Holders to take such steps to consider insolvency that are different in every case. Insolvency does not mean that it is the end. If consultation starts early enough, there may be other options available to allow the business to survive.

My first job was a Wages/Time in Motion Clerk responsible for c.100 machinist/pieceworkers for a then well-known suit manufacturer, (I was the best dressed 18/19-year-old in town. I could buy a suit for £30!) and met several celebrities of the time, including Frank Bruno (Boxer) and Frank Carson (Comedian).

My insolvency career happened by chance when after a couple of years into my first job, the company went into Receivership. On the Friday I was made redundant by the firm appointed to deal with the Receivership and then the following Monday, I was offered a job with them in their London Office.”

  1. Past career, firm, experience, interesting cases you dealt with

“I have worked in the Insolvency industry for over 30 years, working across single partner, mid-tier and big 4 accountancy and finance firms throughout London and the South East, moving up the ranks from Junior Administrator to Senior Administrator and now at Antony Batty & Company LLP, Senior Manager and Head of Case Progression.

Over the years, I have built up vast knowledge and experience, both in term of insolvency processes and the different industry sectors which clients come from.

Here at Antony Batty & Company LLP I am tasked to ensure that clients’ affairs are managed and progressed throughout from appointment to closure, and anything in between, in the most efficient way possible and within statutory deadlines. I am also responsible for the closing processes within the firm.

As for interesting cases ………..I have many, but a few highlights include the following, in which I was part of the team who handled the insolvency of The Reject Shop (Furniture/homeware), Athena (Postcards/posters) and Blessings (Fertility Clinic).”

  1. Interesting fact about yourself, hobbies, interests

“I am an active member of Southborough and District Lions (part of Lions International charity) raising funds and helping distressed individuals and families. As a Lion, I help to organise fun events, such as handing out Christmas Hampers to the elderly, dressing up as a Lion at our annual summer gala day or being Father Christmas for the Children of my local community and switching on the town’s Christmas lights.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing tennis, both at mix-in sessions at my club and at league level. I am a keen walker, which I do most weekends with my fiancée (soon to be Mrs P!).

After all this activity, to reset me for the week ahead, I am also a keen gardener and enjoy a beer or two, or a couple of glasses of wine in the garden. I also like to meditate to the sound of Tibetan Singing Bowls.“
