Neil joined us in 2020 and is a Senior Manager at our London Office.
This month we are shining the spotlight on one of our Senior Insolvency Managers, Neil Barry. We asked Neil to answer some questions, including: what got him into the Insolvency profession, what he especially enjoys about Insolvency, and of course, we also asked him what he enjoys in his spare time away from Insolvency.
1.What do you enjoy about insolvency? What got you into the profession?
“It is always challenging – there is generally something engaging, interesting or difficult that needs to be resolved, plus getting a positive result for a person or company in difficulties is always rewarding, on a professional and a personal level.
I started my career in accountancy, preparing both audit reports and company accounts.
I moved into the insolvency profession via the Civil Service, where I helped assess companies for financial assistance because of my accountancy background.
Following my move into insolvency, I was immediately more engaged with company issues directly, assisting directors with difficult issues that they might be experiencing for the first time.”

Past career, firm, experience, interesting cases you dealt with
“I started with a boutique insolvency practice and then worked at several top ten practices and smaller firms. I gained experience throughout the years becoming manager of an insolvency department.
Along the way I have dealt with running a small tyre factory, helping a meat processing plant keep going, and dealing with the failure of a large foreign exchange company with 12,000 creditors.
I am pleased to have spent a lot of time helping directors and other stakeholders through the liquidation process, both with small family businesses and larger companies, including the insolvent restructuring of a firm of solicitors, which enabled the core business, in time, to recover and become productive again.”

What are your Hobbies and Interests? Any interesting facts about you?
I grew up in Hong Kong and travelled extensively in SE Asia when I was younger.
I am a keen walker (but I need to get my running shoes back on too!) and will be climbing Ben Nevis for the first time shortly. This I hope balances out my interest in food and drink!
