Licensed Insolvency Practitioner Matt co-founded KWR in June 2021
This month we are shining the spotlight on one of our Partners, Licensed Insolvency Practitioner Matt Waghorn, joint founder of K & W Recovery (T/A Antony Batty & Co. Thames Valley), along with Lawrence King. We asked Matt, to answer some questions, including: what got him into the Insolvency profession, some memorable cases he has worked on, and of course, we also asked him what he enjoys in his spare time away from Insolvency.
What do you enjoy about insolvency? What got you into the profession and become an Insolvency Practitioner?
“I had a great first boss who taught me a lot about insolvency but also taught me that you had to enjoy what you do. I think that applies to everything in life.
Every day is different, you get to meet and help people from all walks of life and help them through the toughest situations.
I especially enjoy the strong camaraderie with our referees and professional contacts, many of which were forged in adversity!”
Background and memorable cases
“I trained at Oury Clark, passed my JIEB and was then made Partner in July 2006. I moved to Nortons Recovery in January 2008 with the main task of growing the referral base. Nortons Recovery was acquired by Wilkins Kennedy in May 2011, who were subsequently acquired by Baldwins Holdings in September 2018 and this firm changed its name to Azets. I left Azets in June 2021 to form KWR with Lawrence King and Antony Batty.
I have worked a very varied caseload over the years, from Manufacturing companies to Beauty Salons and Hotels to Hedge Funds. Every day is different.
What are your Hobbies and Interests? Any interesting facts about you?
“I watch most sports and play some – with varying degrees of success.
I have a small interest in a number of horseracing syndicates and my son and I are season ticket holders at Reading FC.
The rest of my free time is spent with my son watching him play sports or being beaten by him at computer games!”
